Derwent First Steps

Derwent First Steps Project is a project jointly funded by the European Social Fund and the Derwent Community Team (New Deal) until March 2005.

The project works with voluntary and community organisations in the Derwent ward of the City to help develop the management and organisational structure of both new and existing voluntary and community organisations.

Derwent First Steps provides one-to-one advice on all aspects of voluntary and community organisations' development needs. It provides training for individuals or groups wishing to become involved in these organisations, whether as committee members, paid employees or volunteers. It has also set up and co-ordinated a Voluntary Sector Forum for the Derwent area.

The project is managed by a steering group consisting of Derby CVS, Derwent Stepping Stones and the Derwent Community Team.

The project offers 3 community hot desks, that give local voluntary and community groups use of a computer, internet access, phone line, fax facility and filing space. First Steps also provides:
  • Computer classes run once a week for members of voluntary groups.
  • High quality posters and leaflets for groups to promote their activities.
  • Childcare resource to enable parents to become involved as volunteers.
  • Support to the voluntary sector to develop a best practice approach when working with volunteers.
