Adult and Community Learning Fund

The two projects being funded by the Adult & Community Learning Fund are now underway with exciting times ahead!

'Bridging the Gap' involves Derby Deaf Family Group, who are deaf parents of hearing children.

The aim is to improve their English skills through drama. For the first year they worked with the Red Earth Theatre Group to produce a pantomime for their children. Their production of Cinderella took place in March this year.

In year two the aim is to open the project to the whole of the deaf community in Derby and form a permanent drama group. They also aim to involve the hearing community and be able to hold multi-lingual performances for everyone to enjoy.

'On the Road to Learning' involves working alongside housed travellers to help them improve their literacy skills through the production of a book about their culture and heritage, using their own words and photographs.

This will enable their children to preserve their culture, and help raise awareness of their community within Derby. Contact is being made with the mothers in the travelling community, who all seem very keen to learn.
